Shirley J. (Showalter) Hardesty-Owens

Shirley J. (Showalter) Hardesty-Owens age 88, of Garrettsville, Ohio passed away August 29, 2020. Shirley was born June 28, 1932 to the late Myrtle and Lewis Showalter and raised on the family farm in Hiram, Ohio along with her two brothers, Lewis and Glenn. She graduated from Hiram High School and then went on to receive a business degree from Boheckers Business College in Ravenna, Ohio. She was a former 4-H advisor in Portage County and enjoyed displaying her food and goodies at the Randolph Fair where she won many blue ribbons. Everyone loved her peanut brittle! She was secretary and member of the Windham Congregational Church where she was active in the Helping Hands group, a member of the choir and choir director. She was also one of the founding members of the “Singing Grannies”. Shirley worked in the car dealership industry for 30 years as a bookkeeper and office manager. After retiring, she enjoyed camping and spending time with her family. She returned to part-time work until age 86, caring for those with special needs. She enjoyed loving and serving those around her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her spouses, James Owens and Charles Hardesty, brother, Glenn Showalter and a grandson.

She will deeply be missed by her sons, Timothy (Christina Davies) Schaer of Minerva, Ohio and Daniel (Denise) Schaer of Ravenna, Ohio; grandchildren, Rebekah (Anthony Gibson) Schaer, Greg Schaer and Josiah Schaer; great-granddaughter, Maddie Gibson affectionately called, “Peanut”; brother, Lewis (Sue) Showalter; sister-in-law, Penny Showalter; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will celebrate her life September 12, 2020 at 2 pm, at Friendship Alliance Church in the pavilion located at 19126 Ravenna Rd. (State Rt 44), Chagrin Falls, OH (Auburn Township). Pastor Conni McCambridge will lead the celebration, and end with an Ice Cream Social, with all of Shirley’s favorites.
