James Melvin Maharg

J. Melvin “Mel” Maharg age 90 of Mayfield Heights, passed away October 30, 2018 at his home.

Born in Chicora, PA, Mel grew up in nearby Butler, PA. After graduating from Butler High School, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and served as a teletype operator. He then graduated from Grove City College and moved to Cleveland. Here, Mel met his future wife, Marie, in the church choir. He retired from General Motors, where he was an accountant at the Fisher Body Plant in Euclid. Mel enjoyed barbershop music and was a faithful member of the local SPEBSQSA chapter for 63 years. In addition to singing in the church choir, he was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church for 52 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John C. and Grace Maharg, as well as his brothers Dean and Mark Maharg., and his wife of 58 years, Marie E. Maharg.

He is survived by his children, Cheryl Moser (Fred); Kirk Maharg (Christine); Gail Ross; grandchildren, Chelsea, Nick, Emily and Lily; great-grandchild, Darla. Also surviving are brothers, John W. and G. Randall Maharg, and sister Twyla Meeder.

Family of Mel will receive friends on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 5200 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst, Ohio from 11:00-12:00 p.m., a memorial service will follow at 12:00 noon, and a luncheon will be held immediately after the service at the church.

Memorial donations in memory of Mel can be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 5200 Mayfield Road, Lyndhurst, OH 44124 and/or to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110.
