Captain James O. Hix Iii, D.D.S.
Captain James O. Hix III, D.D.S. (“Jim’”) was born on November 9, 1942 in Portland, Oregon to James O. Hix, Jr., and Louise A. (DeLorenzo) Hix. Jim grew up in Denver, Colorado and graduated from North High School in 1960, where he played football and
baseball. He graduated from Regis College in 1964, where he also played baseball. Jim graduated from Creighton University’s School of Dentistry in 1968 and joined the U.S.Navy. In June 1975, he earned a master’s degree in Periodontics from IUPUI University
of Indiana/Purdue University.
While in the Navy, Jim was stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Naples, Italy,among other places. In 1979, he left the Navy and went to work at the Indian Hospital in Claremore, Oklahoma, where he lived until his death on August 11, 2018. Over the years, Jim also was employed by the Choctaw Nation, the Creek Nation and taught clinical periodontics to the dentists working for the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
At the age of 46, Jim was an honor graduate of the Army Airborne School, in Ft. Benning, Georgia and is one of the oldest and highest ranking officers (O-6) ever to complete the airborne training.
On August 11, 2018, Jim passed away during the swim portion of the U.S. National Championship (Olympic distance) triathlon in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a strong competitor throughout his life and enjoyed competing in various sporting events. Jim won the US Duathlon National Championship in the men’s 75-79 age group in 2017, and represented the United States at various international events. He passed his love of sports onto his children (whom he coached) and to his grandchildren, with whom he enjoyed playing sports and watching compete.
Jim is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann Hix of Claremore, Oklahoma, their three children: Andrea Mahoney and husband Kevin of Denver, Colorado, James O. Hix IV and wife Kim of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Jason Hix, M.D., and wife Jennifer Brake, M.D.,of South Bend, Indiana. Jim also is survived by eight grandchildren, his sister Sharon Booton, of Arvada, Colorado and brother Robert Hix and wife Chris also of Arvada,Colorado.
Jim enjoyed life, living each day to the fullest. He had no regrets and died while doing something he loved.
