Candace Carmichael

Candace Carmichael, 69, of Euclid, Ohio, passed away on January 27, 2020, after an 18-year battle with cancer.

Candace was born on June 16, 1950, to Marjorie and Reynold Scheurman in Cleveland, OH. After graduating from Euclid High School in 1968, she went on to study at Western Kentucky University, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Speech/Physical Education & Recreation and Master’s Degree in Public Service.

In 1990, Candace established the MetroHealth Advantage Program, a senior citizen outreach program at MetroHealth Hospital. Upon her retirement in 2013, the Cuyahoga County Division of Senior and Adult Services and the MetroHealth Medical Center established the Candace L. Carmichael Award, honoring her legacy. The Award recognizes an individual who exhibits meritorious and innovative service to seniors in Cuyahoga County.

Post-retirement, Candace was an active proponent of cancer awareness. With Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance’s Survivors Teaching Students program, she would share her personal stories of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship directly with medical/healthcare students in a classroom setting. She was an enthusiastic presence at every Outrun Ovarian Cancer (OROC) event from 2003-2018.

Candace is predeceased by her parents and her sister, Denise.

She is survived by her husband, Len Carmichael; sisters, Pamela (George) Graham and Joy (Mike) Reider; brothers, Keith (Donna) Scheurman and Clark (Kathy) Scheurman; children, Balee’ Riley (Stephen Frisch), Casey Carmichael and Katy Carmichael; grandchildren, Riley, Connor, Kennedy, Cole and Candace; her beloved pets (domestic and feral), Sophie, Mary, Lily, Bud, Squeaker, Callie and Bella.

There will be a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, February 1, from 2-5 p.m. at Lakeshore Christian Church, 28010 Lakeshore Blvd., Euclid.
