David A. Agnes

David A. Agnes 1936-2017 of North Canton passed away quietly in his sleep after a 22-month struggle with brain cancer. He will be missed by so many including his loving wife of 56 years, Toby (Gearhart); two children, David C. (Angel) Agnes and Cristy Agnes Smith; two grandchildren, Kyle (Valerie) Agnes and Allison Agnes; numerous loving sisters and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.

In his preteen years he enjoyed the north east end of Canton, Crystal Park, McKinley airport, hanging out at the stock car garages and going to Canton Motor Speedway.  As a teenager, the WWII vets there allowed him to work on their race cars.  Since his own father (David C. Agnes) had passed away before he was born, these men mentored him as he developed a love for racing and airplanes.  On his 17th birthday he joined the U.S. Air Force to follow in their footsteps.  He served as a Crew Chief on a B26 Bomber stationed at Itami Air Force Base in Osaka, Japan.

In the late 50s, when he returned to Canton, he had a 1956 Chevy from California he entered in car shows.  He also enjoyed racing his 1955 Ford and his 1960 Chevy. Before marriage he enjoyed drinking with his buddies and staying out all night, much to the displeasure of his mother Thelma who passed away in 1996.

In 2003, he retired from the Hoover company after 42 years. Working there wasn’t a whole lot of fun but he did what he had to do to raise his family. He had a fondness for nostalgia and would reminisce about Canton, the 50’s era, stock car and super modified racing and just hanging out.

He took pride in his children, the “old” Hoover company, North Canton and Ohio State football.

There will be no calling hours or services.   Interment will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National Veterans’ Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.  The family would like to acknowledge the staff of the Aultman Woodlawn Compassionate Care Center for the incredible work they do.
